InSite: Professional Development Programme

Their Past Your Future (TPYF) at the Imperial War Museum is pleased to announce that the successful InSite programme will continue for one more year.  Applications for InSite 2009 are now open and will close on 27 February.  This innovative and exciting yearlong programme has been described by participants as enriching, inspiring, reflective, invigorating, incredible and a privilege.  Further details about the course and how to apply can be found at www.theirpast-yourfuture.org.uk/InSite

Through overseas visits to Germany, Czech Republic and Hungary, and seminars in London, the course aims to equip participants with subject knowledge and also the means to use historic sites, museums and eyewitnesses to bring the past to life.  It also enables discussion about the issues inherent in teaching controversial and sensitive subjects and builds confidence in the delivery of these subjects.  There is also an element of training in risk assessment, health and safety, itinerary planning and other practical issues arising from leading educational trips.

As part of their commitment to the course, participants complete a project, of their own choosing and related to their own work area.  This can take any form and projects from 2008 included the development of training seminars and workshops, teaching resources, a website, and loan boxes.  Details of projects from 2008 can be found on the TPYF website.  The project disseminates the learning from the course to a wider audience and ensures a legacy for this learning.  In return, TPYF, supported by the Big Lottery, covers most other costs of the programme.

What makes InSite unique is that it immerses participants in history.  It allows them to think more academically, take a step back and really look at the key issues.  By including a mixture of professionals on the course, participants can concentrate on what's really important, without being so constrained by the curriculum and exam specifications.  As well as the obvious gains in subject knowledge and understanding, one of the most valuable things about InSite is the networking and friendship opportunities it offers.  Staying with a group for an extended period of time, travelling, eating and drinking with them, provides countless opportunities for conversations, shared ideas and experiences.  InSite provides a good combination of formal and informal learning in order to reinvigorate and enthuse.
