Module 7 – Early Years: Planning for Learning Outside the Classroom

Learning outside the classroom for early years

This module is aimed at supporting early years practitioners to consider the many learning benefits of encouraging the free flow of learning opportunities between indoors and outdoors, and beyond their normal settings, and the considerations for doing this including linking experiences to early learning goals.  There are four sessions varying from 80 to 110 minutes per session. The module includes trainer notes and session facilitation scripts, PowerPoint presentations, including an introductory presentation showing real-life examples of learning outside the classroom, a delegate resource booklet, and all the resources necessary for the training. It also shows explicit links to the parts of the How To Guidance material that trainers/ facilitators will need to read before delivering this training.

The following Making the Case presentation shows how worldwide research has demonstrated that learning outside the classroom has a positive impact on the development of young people. Improvements are seen in young people’s learning, physical experiences, social interaction, emotional well-being and response, whether through a behaviour change or a shift in values and attitudes.

It should be emphasised that the training module has been designed to be delivered either as four consecutive sessions, or as stand- alone units (although the order of the session is important).  However, trainers will naturally want to adapt the outlined activities and suggested timings according to the needs of delegates, different contexts, and their own training style.
