Module 5 – EVCs: Learning Outside the Classroom – What You Need to Know

Learning outside the classroom for Educational Visits Coordinators

This module has been written for those within Children’s Services with an interest in the role of Learning Outside the Classroom Coordinators and those who are visit leaders, or have an overview of learning outside the classroom within a school, youth club or early years setting. The module covers strategies for planning a successful learning outside the classroom experience, policies and procedures to take into account, and tips for EVCs. You will find PowerPoint presentations, facilitation scripts for each session, resources and materials as well as a delegate resource booklet. You will also find notes for the trainer and links to relevant parts of the How To Guidance materials.

The following Making the Case presentation shows how worldwide research has demonstrated that learning outside the classroom has a positive impact on the development of young people. Improvements are seen in young people’s learning, physical experiences, social interaction, emotional well-being and response, whether through a behaviour change or a shift in values and attitudes.

Year 2 children visit the local War Memorial and lay a class made wreath on Remembrance Day.  The children looked at the names and symbols on the memorial and the wreaths left by officials and families.  The children and adults were moved by the whole experience, which could not have been replicated inside a classroom.
