Module 1 – Teachers: The Learning Experience and Evaluating Impact
Learning outside the classroom for teachers
This module is aimed at supporting teachers in the classroom to consider the learning benefits of taking children out of the classroom, and the considerations for doing this. There are four sessions of approximately 90 minutes per session. The module includes trainer notes and session facilitation scripts, PowerPoint presentations, including an introductory presentation showing real-life examples of learning outside the classroom, a delegate resource booklet, and all the resources necessary for the training. It also shows explicit links to the parts of the How To Guidance material that you will want to read before delivering this training.
The following Making the Case presentation shows how worldwide research has demonstrated that learning outside the classroom has a positive impact on the development of young people. Improvements are seen in young people’s learning, physical experiences, social interaction, emotional well-being and response, whether through a behaviour change or a shift in values and attitudes.

In another school, in the face of some parental opposition, the headteacher felt it was extremely important to continue taking pupils each year to a mosque because simply being in that place contributed much to the pupils’ understanding of Islam. It also helped to promote community cohesion.
